Democracy ? What democracy ?!
08.07.2025 to 14.09.2025
An exhibition featuring press cartoons by Godfrey Mwampembwa, from Nairobi (Kenya) and Nadia Khiari, better known as Willis from Tunis. At a time when the core values of democracy are being radically challenged, the Caux Initiatives of Change Foundation presents a thought-provoking exhibition of around forty press cartoons exploring this theme. Created by cartoonists Gado (Godfrey Mwampembwa, from Nairobi/Kenya) and Nadia Khiari, also known as Willis from Tunis, the exhibition offers a sharp, ironic and at times cynical look at democracy thought the eyes of two artists from the African continent. Their works capture political moments from recent years—drawing on events not only from Kenya and Tunisia, but also from across Africa, Europe, and the global stage. The drawings reveal how the concept of democracy has been stripped of its original meaning- hijacked, distorted, reinterpreted or exploited. Like freedom, democracy risks becoming a hollow term, its deeper meaning lost in the shifting currents of an increasingly complex and elusive global political chessboard.
